Lahore: Punjab Food Authority (PFA) may ban the production of Banaspati ghee all over the province. A summary in this regard has been forwarded to the scientific panel of the authority for final decision.

This proposal has been drafted keeping strategies adopted by the developed countries in view, where manufacturing of Banaspati ghee is completely banned.

The final decision regarding the ban will however be taken after a through research on the matter by qualified PHD doctors, according to reports.

Punjab Food Authority DG Noorul Amin Mengal said Banaspati ghee included trans-fats, which is one of the major causes behind heart diseases and cholesterol problems. He also said that substandard palm oil, chemicals like nickel, platinum and plodinium are used in the production of ghee, which could result in cancer.

PFA has been raiding ghee and oil brands and sealing them or penalising them with heavy fines if they fail quality assurance checks. Over 15,000kg substandard ghee and oil have been removed from open market uptil now.

PFA sealed Butt Karahi in Faisal Town recently while imposing heavy fines on others including GFC restaurant, Shinwari restaurant, Amin Milk Shop, Almajid Restaurant etc.
