RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi police on Wednesday arrested 10 suspects accused of rioting in Rawalpindi during the Muharram 10 sectarian clashes.
Violence had erupted in the city when a group of miscreants opened fire near an Ashura procession and burned cloth shops in Raja Bazaar. Army was called in to control the situation, while a curfew was put in place.
Three of the suspects have confessed to the crime, while other seven were taken into custody on suspicion.
Those who have confessed were identified as Munawar and his sons Nayyar and Tayyab.
SSP Operation Sikander Hayat was posted as Officer on Special Duty OSD and told to report to Punjab Police headquarters.
The move comes a day after the provincial government ordered a major shake-up of law enforcement personnel in the wake of Rawalpindi unrest.
Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khan Baig had changed nearly the entire top-level police bureaucracy in Rawalpindi city.
