Games Inbox: Zelda 3DS applause, GAME vs. PS4, and Steam Machines

The evening Inbox recommends the new Ace Attorney downloadable content, as one reader has advice for advanced Remote Play.

Round of applause

I just want to pay a quick tribute to Eiji Aonuma and the staff at Nintendo EAD for their work on the latest Zelda game on the 3DS.

For over 15 years, since he started out as a designer on Ocarina Of Time, Mr Aonuma has had to incentivise his team of artists, designers and programmers to build on these perfect foundations. The results have been varied, but never less than brilliant.

A Link Between Worlds is Aonuma’s best game to date. It’s not only the best portable Zelda since Link’s Awakening; it is the best entry full-stop since Majora’s Mask, and quite possibly one of the best of all time. Unlike recent home console titles, this game gives you a seamless rush of enjoyment from start to finish. There’s no padding, no hand-holding, no interminable eulogies about the old kingdom; just 10 of the best dungeons in the series’ history, and a wonderfully balanced world of engaging diversions.

GC: We agree entirely. Although Majora’s Mask was Aonuma’s first game as director, so you’re going to have to choose which you think is best.

More objections

Just wanted to big up the new Phoenix Wright downloadable case that’s available from the in-game menu. So far I’d say it’s the funniest case in the whole game, with a wonderful roster of oddball characters. The exhibitionist writer Norma DePlume is a particular favourite! Have you had time to play it yet, GC?

PS: Has anyone played Jett Rocket 2 on the 3DS eShop? From the trailer it looks like an awesome 3D platformer, and the reviews I’ve seen suggest it might be worth a punt.

Gone for good

RE: That annoying contact details message on starting up your Xbox 360. I’ve been getting it every so often (maybe once per week?) for months. They also gave my mobile and email and feel this is sufficient. I find if you hit ‘B’ to quit it you are signed out but upon signing back in its gone again… for now!

I had the same issue on my Xbox 360 with it constantly requesting more telephone numbers/email addresses for security, and after being worried that I would have issues with the Xbox One contacted Microsoft support on Twitter. It turned out I hadn’t verified them in Hotmail and once I had it has stopped happening.

Its been a while since I posted a letter to you GC. Like Mousechime I keep getting these stupid security messages from Microsoft. I’ve given mobile numbers, email addresses and even signed in to Xbox Live and updated my security but it persists. I’ve given up. I’m not going through that nonsense with another console. I hope the Xbone dashboard is faster than the Xbox 360 one. I have a 120GB broadband and I make a cuppa while the Xbox 360 loads, it is so slow. I can hardly use Explorer. It takes an age to load pages.

Wondered if WipEout 2048 might make it to PlayStation 4, even as a download. I thought that was the whole point of the Cross Play business? I know Studio Liverpool are defunct but I am sure they were owned by Sony so they should own the rights to the game.

GC: No WipEout game has been a significant hit for years, decades really. We think Sony has pretty much given up. Just as Nintendo has with F-Zero.

Backwards and forwards

I plan to have an Xbox One by Christmas. I currently use my Xbox Live gamertag through my Xbox 360. When I purchase the Xbox One I can transfer achievements and gamertag, etc. over from my Xbox 360. Can I keep using my gamertag on both the Xbox One and Xbox 360?

GC: You only need one gamertag for both consoles. We haven’t tried going back from the Xbox One to the Xbox 360 version of the same game though, so we’re not sure about that.

Stream Box

The Steam Machine looks an interesting proposition for people without a decent PC but I’m waiting for the details on the streaming box. I have a fairly decent PC and the ability to stream the games to my big TV in the living room is an exciting prospect.

GC: You’d need a console for the primary reason you’d want any games-playing device: the exclusive games.

Shocking Remote

I think this is the link I read – the footage is on YouTube also I think. If a genuine story though surely Sony will patch in DualShock Remote Play control as an option and sell something that attaches the PS Vita onto the controller in an ideal viewing position (whether being used as a second screen or for out and out Remote Play).

Phased out

Does anyone know what farce GAME is doing over the PlayStation 4, they say they have limited stock and that weird phase system, but for £600 you can walk out of the store tonight with the ultimate bundle?

Which kinda flies in the face and shows you much they really care about greed, I pre-ordered a Killzone bundle and they gave me some hokum pokum about you’re in phase 2 you won’t get it till before Christmas or after New Year.

And most of them have already paid off their pre-orders so why do you have to wait so that someone else can waltz out with the bragging rights? Oh, I got my PlayStation 4 on launch, most of the games in the bundle I’m not interested in, same with the Blu-rays and the ones that I am interested in I’m ordering online or getting them for Christmas.

But what I find really irksome is I pre-ordered a couple of months back but they emailed me about the midnight launches. The in-store staff are saying they don’t have a clue and turn up tonight. And when I did get a call off them it was a voice mail of someone slamming the phone down.

GC: We’re afraid it’s not backwards compatible with any previous console’s games.

This week’s Hot Topic

The Xbox One is released this Friday, which means there’s only one obvious point of discussion for this weekend’s Inbox: are you buying one and if not why not?

It’s a been a bumpy ride for Microsoft since the Xbox One’s unveiling in May but none of that matters if at the end of the day people still buy their console – so we want to know your reasons for either buying an Xbox One this year, waiting until later, or refusing to buy one at all.

What are the most and least appealing elements of the console to you, and how do you feel about key controversies such as the price, the power, and the inclusion of Kinect? What do you think of Xbox One’s games line-up, both at launch and beyond, and what are your predictions for how it will fare in the years to come?

The small print

New Inbox updates appear twice daily, every weekday morning and afternoon. Letters are used on merit and may be edited for length.

You can also submit your own 500 to 600-word 4Player viewer features at any time, which if used will be shown in the next available weekend slot.
